I’ve just finished a biography of Alice Sheldon, who wrote as James Tiptree Jr. (If by chance you don’t already know this.) Sheldon was not able to write successfully until she adopted a persona—in this case, the persona of a man—which freed her to use a voice with authority, and to write without worrying what people would think.
