Brain Activity

Mutant Girl

August 8th, 2007 by Maureen McHugh

I loved
superheros with pneumatic muscles.
Batgirl never threw a fist. I wanted to fly
but Supergirl had half a cape.
Those mutant girls, though, soaring so
high, gymnastic martial artists.
My hair would whip around
my face, power shoot from my hands,
heavy weather.

The hours would be tough.
Bruce Wayne would buy us all group medical
for when Dr. Xavier couldn’t fix us up.
Mutants are lonely, but I would get
a big sweet dog
and when I came home
from saving the world
I’d still take him for a walk
no matter how tired I was.
