Processed Food

I’m making dinner for Bob’s band tomorrow. It’s really the writer Brad Denton’s band. The band practices at Brad’s mostly, but sometimes they practice here, and when they do, I cook. I’m making shredded beef sandwiches, macaroni and cheese (for the vegetarian, but really because macaroni and cheese, like mashed potatoes and gravy, is the food of the Gods.)

I make this stuff from scratch. Everything but the rolls for the shredded beef sandwiches. I think of myself as not liking processed food. But for me, this meal is a bit of compromise, because I’m making chocolate mousse pie. The pie has a cookie crumb crust.

21 Oreo cookies
½ stick of butter, room temp, cut in bits

The butter is organic. But by definition, Oreo cookies are not organic or even cuisine. They are pretty much near the top in the pantheon of processed foods. Nothing about an Oreo cookie says wholesome, slow food, chef prepared, your-mother-made-it-just-like-this. Read More »
