Brain Activity

Captchas

April 7th, 2007 by Morgan J. Locke

Here’s something fun, for us word geeks: a modest proposal to promote better spelling and grammar on the net.

“Hello, and thank you for your interest in the internet.”

And while I’m in word fu mode, here is an online etymology dictionary. Did you know the word heresy originally meant “to choose?” Ah, for the old days, when choice was bad thing!

I sent him an email. I love this concept but he has one that isn’t clear cut enough.

“It is poor form to ________ your temper in a discussion group.”

The choices are “lose” or “loose.”

But just as one can unleash one’s anger, one can loose one’s temper.

    Unusual usage but not incorrect.

    I know–I’m a pedant.

  2. Ken Houghton Says:

And we love you for it, Steve.

(That said, I would make that the Homepage for my six-year-old’s computer in an instant. He should market the thing.)

Morgan – Choice is still a bad thing. After all, the late Milton Friedman’s accessible-classic is called Free to Choose.

  3. Erin O'Brien Says:

    I don’t get it.

    Send help.
