<hr />Talking about I-Macs, what did you think I meant?

To be fair, it depends on the hardware. If you've got the mouse with the little tiny rolly ball, then it can be configured to right click. And you can program the little rolly thing for middle click stuff.

But you can also plug in a three button usb mouse and go to town. The Mac doesn't care.

Actually, there *is* a right click. You just have to change the mouse settings. Go into System Preferences > Keyboard&Mouse > Mouse settings. There should be an image of a mouse with some dropdowns pointing at different stuff. Look for the dropdown that points to the right side of the mouse and select "Secondary Button." That should do the trick.

Maybe not, but it certainly accelerated it….!

You have no idea how long it took me to figure out which icon was for MS Word. It doesn’t even look like a “W”! And then, Safari? That program is horrible. And the folder views are also really annoying. I got the three panel one eventually, but even that is extremely inconvenient. Also, you can’t just copy and paste, first you highlight, and then go to the toolbar. No right click! No middle click! Agghhhh!

We use those in our digital class. They're super fast for rendering and the wide screen is excellent, but MacOS just makes me crazy.

Yeah, I have a 3 gig jump drive that I use for backups and transfer to the laptop for travel.

Eventually I'll need a better laptop. Right now I'm just using an ancient, tiny G3. It does for word processing, power point and (just barely) spreadsheet work, but is way under-spec for some of the other apps I use. I'm putting it off as long as possible, but eventually I'll have to cave.

I'm always finding myself moving info from one computer to the next. I have found that using a 1GB to 2GB Thumb Drive can cut down the data transfer time a great deal. Oh yeah and WOOT for Apples!

Morgan and Steve, I applaud you both for being smart enough to steer "old" technology to good use. It may be technology of the past but it can still be very useful :)

But you are right, ranonymous, that e-waste is not a trivial problem. Neither is computer manufacturing, for that matter.

I haven't bought a new computer in almost six years, though, and I work in a computer-based profession. So I don't feel guilty about this purchase.

That's one way I try to minimize the impact of my tech purchases: buy as close to the bleeding edge as I can afford (and expect to need); find a good home for the one I'm letting go; make the new one last as long as I possibly can before buying something new.

I believe Morg is giving the old computer to a criminal. (So it won't go to waste.)

I believe they intend to set it up to phish for passwords and do spamming and nigerian letters of appeal.

Good thing it's not going into the e-waste dump.

---

And on a serious note, Morg and I have talked about this issue, and we both tend to find homes for old equipment or convert them into servers and the like.
